Luggage of around 772 passengers, mostly Nepalis returning home from abroad on Tuesday, has been lost at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). Sources say luggage of 150 passengers of Air Arabia, 255 of Fly Dubai, 50 of Etihad, 60 of Oman, 55 of Qatar, 100 of Malaysian and 102 of Malindo has been lost.
The majority of passengers losing luggage are those returning after foreign employment and higher education abroad. Luggage of some foreign tourists coming to visit Nepal has also been lost. The passengers have been irate with the airline companies concerned after management of the Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC), responsible for ground handling, told them that it does not have their luggage. The TIA Office, meanwhile, has asked the passengers to exercise patience as the luggage may have been misplaced due to the busy schedule following resumption of the TIA after accident of the Turkish Airlines plane.
Chief of the Terminal Management Tek Nath Situola claimed that such a large number of luggage cannot be lost and said they may have missed to place the luggage on the planes. “The airline companies concerned must compensate if the luggage, indeed, has been lost. They may be found by tomorrow if they have been misplaced here,” he added. The meeting of TIA management on Tuesday, meanwhile, has decided to draw attention of the airline companies concerned to the missing luggage and hardship for passengers in lack of passenger-friendly behavior by the airline staffers. Passengers have more complaints especially against Air Arabia and Fly Dubai, according to security sources at the TIA. Sitoula revealed that the airline companies are being asked about the missing luggage.
Some say luggage may not have arrived also as many airline companies bring luggage in separate cargo flights. General sales agents (GSA) and official representatives of the airline companies in Nepal refused to comment on the issue.
Passengers have been struggling to receive their luggage in time as the TIA has been extremely busy for the past three days. The passengers are angry due to lack of seriousness from the NAC, responsible for ground handling, and the TIA Office on top of that. The passengers complain that the problem of missing luggage, a chronic problem at the TIA, has worsened recently. The problem is recurring repeatedly due to poor management of the NAC. The TIA Office has not even been able to warn the TIA.
