MAR 05 - Fagu Purnima or Holi , the festival of colours, is being celebrated on Thursday in the Capital and the hilly region with much excitement and enthusiasm by smearing colours and spraying water among friends and family members.
People, since early morning, have begin the celebration by smearing “Abeer”, or red vermilion powder and throwing water balloons and water-filled plastic pouches at each other. Holi , a popular festival in the country, begins on the eighth day of the new moon and ends with the burning of ‘Chir’, a pole installed earlier.
The festival will be observed in the Tarai region on Friday. The festival revolves around the mythology of the demon king Hiranya Kashyapu ordering his sister Holi ka to sit on fire with Pralhad, the son of the demon king and a devout follower of Lord Bishnu, so that Pralhad would stop chanting the name of the Lord. The catch was that Holi ka would not burn in the fire because of a boon she had received from god. But it so happened that Holi ka was burned in fire while Pralhad remained unharmed and came out chanting the name of god.
The festival is celebrated to mark the victory of good over evil.
