Threats to the Chure seem to emerge from a variety of unscrupulous people, including smugglers. New settlers and locals also harvest the natural resources.
The sum total of all the human activities are leading to a fast denudation of the hills. Erosion and other environmental consequences are getting starker than ever. The increasing pressure of the population has strained the carrying capacity of the fragile hills. Although past conservation efforts have protected the natural beauty of the hills in some parts, there are many other parts where much is left to be done. The Rastrapati Chure Terai Madhes Conservation Programme has called for attention to these problems and prospects of conservation in the area. Given a clear vision for the hills as to what they should be like in 10 or 20 years from now and the will to realise the vision, backed by government budget and appointment of the right people to do the difficult job of controlling natural environmental degradation and man-made disasters,
