KATHMANDU, MAR 11 - After three straight days of record air traffic caused by a backlog of flights, the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) is expected to return to normal from Wednesday. Airport authorities said they handled 69 flights to and from TIA between 6:00am and 6:00pm on Tuesday while as many as 45 flights have been scheduled to land and take off by Wednesday morning. On Sunday, the country’s sole international airport handled 120 flights, while the traffic jumped to 132 over the course of 24 hours on Monday.
Due to heavy air traffic, delays and cancellations dominated the arrival and departure boards at the airport. “Additional flights asked by international carriers to handle the passenger rush are expected to reduce on Thursday,” an airport official said. Most of the airlines have added extra flights to handle the passengers that could not be flown as the airport was shut for four days after a Turkish Airlines flight crash-landed last week.
“As there were no diversions and cancellations on Tuesday, we are looking for a better situation on Wednesday,” said the official. Meanwhile, the airport handled 200 take-offs and landings of domestic carriers on Tuesday. The TIA had handled 172 domestic flight movements on Monday.
The airport has been opened round-the-clock till Wednesday since flights resumed on Saturday evening. The disabled Turkish Airlines jet had obstructed the runway, halting all international flights in and out of the country that left thousands of people stranded.
