“The primary purpose of joining the government was to draft a new constitution,” UML secretary Pradeep Gyawali told eKantipur after the meeting. “The question arises why should we stay put with the government if that purpose cannot be met? We will discuss with NC on this matter.” UML is of the view that it is irrelevant to wait any longer while the talks with opposition also seem elusive. Therefore, UML has been pressing its coalition partner NC to move ahead the majority process at Constituent Assembly. UML leaders have been suspecting NC’s intention as it seems focused on its General Convention and other internal issues by stopping the task of constitution drafting in the name of seeking consensus.
As of late, the opposition leaders have been informally talking about power sharing. If the government is the key issue for forging consensus, discussions can be held regarding the induction of other parties into the government, UML said.
